William Schallert

William Schallert was born in 1922 and died in 2016. He had a very successful career in television, often playing authority figures. He also has been successful on stage and in movies, as well as being the president of the Screen Actors Guild.

Schallert first put his "old man" character to use when he played Patty Duke's father in The Patty Duke Show, when Schallert played his character's older uncle. It was Schallert himself who suggested that the Admiral not be able to get in a chair and he also came up with the "Could somebody give me a push?" line. The Admiral appeared in three episodes, although it sure seems like more, doesn't it? Schallert also played The Exterminator in the show's fifth season.

I had the pleasure of meeting him twice and he was incredibly friendly and also was a huge hit at the Get Smart Gathering. He left me a voicemail using the Admiral's voice and I couldn't stop laughing when I heard it.
